JOIN THE LAB

Do you have interest in exploring marine and terrestrial biodiversity?

The main goal of our lab is to use a multidisciplinary approach to understand biodiversity across space and time. This requires a collaborative effort from a diverse team focused on exploring patterns and processes of biodiversity dynamics, ecological interactions, and the impacts of global change on biodiversity.

We also prioritize candidates with strong technical skills. A robust quantitative background is highly valued, as many of our projects involve advanced data analysis, statistical modeling, and computer simulations. Proficiency in data analysis and coding, particularly in R, is preferred. Effective written and oral communication skills, especially for both academic and public audiences, are essential assets. A track record of peer-reviewed publications is desirable, as completing projects is just as important as starting them. Additionally, given that we conduct empirical research in marine and terrestrial environments both domestically and internationally, fieldwork experience—particularly with diving techniques—is critical.

We understand that such opportunities may not be accessible to everyone, and we are committed to supporting applicants eager to learn and grow. We value potential and determination, and we are here to help you acquire new skills. A passion for continuous learning and improvement is essential to succeed with us.

If you think your goals and values align with our lab’s mission, we’d love to hear from you! Please email our lab PI, Juan Pablo Quimbayo, at quimbayojp@miami.edu with “Prospective Student” or “Prospective Postdoc” in the subject line. In your email, please briefly:

  1. Share how your experiences, skills, and goals align with our lab’s work.

  2. Tell us about the research questions that excite you most.

  3. Be specific about any project ideas you have, along with any funding sources you’ve secured, applied for, or plan to target.

Please attach your CV and a writing sample (such as a class essay, project proposal, or manuscript) or include a link to your webpage with these materials. If there’s a good fit, we’ll get back to you promptly to discuss the next steps.
